The Cerritos College athletics 2020 Spring Sports season has officially been canceled, effective immediately, due to the growing concerns over the spread of the coronavirus in the U.S. and the state. This action was taken by the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), the governing body of state athletics. The Falcons baseball, softball, men's and women's track and field, men's and women's swim teams and men's and women's tennis seasons and events schedule are canceled due to the ruling.
However, as Cerritos College President/Superintendent Dr. Jose Fierro has stated, we are still "open for business". That means the college services are still available to all students. Below is a list of both college services, as well as student-athlete announcements that were handed down by the CCCAA and NCAA information. CCCAA Board Actions – COVID Related
Hopefully, you saw the release that was sent out on Friday afternoon. To reiterate, the CCCAA Board of Directors voted to go with Option 1 and continue with the plan that was adopted in July, affirmed that whether an institution participates or not will be a local decision with input from local county health officials, directed the COVID-19 Working Group to identify opt-in/opt-out date(s) and in anticipation of some institutions not participating in all or some of their sports, gave the state office the authority to work with conference commissioners for those institutions/individual sport programs that may need to be hosted out for competition.
The CCCAA Board also approved a recommendation to not charge any of our student-athletes with a season of competition for any CCCAA competition during spring 2021. It's important to note that this will also come with a disclaimer, similar to the one that is associated with our injury/illness waivers, and states that the NCAA may not honor the waiver. The NAIA has always indicated that it honors the waivers of other governing bodies.
The CCCAA Board also modified the requirements for the spring sport scholar-team and scholar-athlete awards, which are due to your conferences on November 16 (November 15 is a Sunday) and from the Conference to the CCCAA on December 1.
Finally, the CCCAA Board directed the COVID-19 Working Group and the Finance Committee to review the RFI's related to testing that were received by the Foundation for California Community Colleges. As a reminder, the Foundation instituted an RFI on behalf of our institutions to utilize our bulk purchasing power as it relates to the cost of testing.
COVID Issues
We received some good news from the Governor's Office in that it was confirmed that the high contact risk sports have to meet the test and result within 48 hours of each competition as opposed to all sports. This does not mean that the other sports won't have testing requirements, but it doesn't have to be at the same level as the high contact risk. The CCCATA is in the process of determining what our requirements will be for the low and medium sports. The guidance for Institutions of Higher Education adopts the NCAA's classifications. The NCAA defines high contact risk sports as basketball, football, soccer, indoor volleyball, water polo and wrestling. Medium contact risk sports are baseball, beach volleyball, cross country and softball, and low contact risk sports are golf, swimming & diving, tennis and track & field. It’s also important to note that the level of risk in cross country and track & field are dependent upon the student-athlete's proximity to other unmasked individuals such as the start or finish of a race
