
Cerritos College sophomore second baseman Derrick Edwards has received a scholarship to play at Cal State Monterey Bay. Edwards, who came to the Falcons after walking on at Arizona State University out of high school, was a 2nd Team All-South Coast Conference selection his freshman season.
As a sophomore, Edwards batted .274 with a team-leading four home runs, 25 walks and nine stolen bases, while tying for second on the team with 22 RBI. He had a trio of three-hit games on the season and had a .963 fielding percentage while having a hand in 27 double plays.
He concluded his freshman season on a 15-game hitting streak which helped him to a .315 batting average, along with 15 doubles and a team-leading 35 RBI. He also collected a trio of three-hit games in his freshman year and drove in a career-high four RBI twice.
Edwards will be joining a Cal State Monterey Bay team that went 28-24 on the year and lost both of their games in the CCAA Championship Tournament. The 2016 team included former Falcon Ryan Arambula, who was a starting pitcher and went 5-5 in his senior season. The Otters are losing one infielder to graduation.
