Falcons run out of time in 28-21 loss to Bakersfield

Looking to win their second conference game in a row, the Cerritos College football team ran into Bakersfield College's Derrick Vickers on Saturday. The Falcons led 14-7 in the first half, but saw the Renegades (5-2, 1-1) break a 21-21 tie with a fourth quarter touchdown with 8:55 for a 28-21 Northern League decision. Cerritos (3-5, 1-1) will host College of the Canyons at 7:00 p.m. next Saturday.

Driving deep into Renegade territory in the fourth quarter, sophomore running back Kishawn Holmes (Vista Murrieta HS) was stripped of the ball by Oluwaseun Ajayi at the 11-yard line with 5:31 left in the game. The Falcon defense held and forced a punt. They also withstood a 44-yard run by Vickers on the drive, who scored three of the four Bakersfield touchdowns and accounted for 191 yards on the ground and 39 more through the air.

On their final drive of the game, sophomore quarterback Nick Mitchell (Mount Si (WA) HS/Oregon State University) missed a golden opportunity to tie the game, but missed a wide open Jacob Gasser (Los Alamitos HS) down the sideline.

Then, facing a fourth down, Mitchell and freshman center Mark Millan (El Rancho HS) mishandled the snap, with Mykeil Clayton recovering the ball. Millan was starting in place sophomore starter Daniel Alanouf (Los Alamitos HS).

Cerritos took a 14-7 lead in the second quarter on an 8-yard run by Holmes with 9:27 left in the second quarter, which was in response to Bakersfield's opening touchdown. On the drive after the tying touchdown, sophomore Elijah Walker (Artesia HS) stepped in front of a Cesar De Leon pass at the Renegdaes 21-yard line and went into the end zone untouched and the team's only lead of the night.

But it was Vickers who caused the most problems for the Falcon defense, as he added three more touchdowns to his state-leading total.

Holmes looked to keep pace and concluded the night with 132 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns. He was spelled by freshman Querale Hall (Mayfair HS), who had 50 yards on the ground, while Mitchell rushed for a season-high 96 yards. He went 12-for-22 from the air for 116 yards.

Walker led the team with eight stops and one tackle for loss, while sophomore linebackers Alex Bush (La Habra HS) and Miles Henry-Davis (Olympus, UT HS) each posted seven tackles.
