On Tuesday afternoon, the Cerritos College men's tennis team won their fifth straight match, as they shut out visiting Orange Coast College, 9-0. The Falcons (8-1) handed the Pirates (6-1) their first loss of the season. The team will now host Cypress College at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday.
The day started with doubles play and the Falcons picked up a pair of 8-1 wins, with the #2 match extended to an 8-4 score for the pairing of sophomore Kwangeun Lee (Sunny Hills HS) and freshman Dario Rico-Altozano (Colegio Cumbre, Spain), which improved their record together to 5-1.
Singles play mirrored the success of doubles, as all six matches were straight set wins by Cerritos. At the top of ladder, freshman Kent Hunter (Home Schooled) recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win, while his doubles partner, freshman Victor Castro (Novo Hamburgo, Brazil) shut out Ho Tam, 6-0, 6-0. In the #3 spot, freshman Alex Prokopchuk (School 45, Ukraine) also won without allowing his opponent to win a game, with his doubles partner, #4 player, Biel Roca Carreras (Iguolada, Spain), registering a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory.
The day concluded with Lee (6-0, 6-0) and sophomore Marcos Paulo Silvestre (Colégio Tiradentes of PMMG, Brazil), who won, 6-1, 6-1, finishing off the Pirates.
