After opening the season with seven consecutive wins, the Cerritos College men's water polo team suffered a pair of two-goal losses on the first day of the Golden West Tournament. Cerritos (8-3) hosts the same Roadrunners team at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday in their South Coast Conference opener.

In the loss to the Gauchos, a 3-3 tie after the first period was a 6-3 deficit the Falcons could never recover from as the game continued. Late second quarter goals by Sebastian Rico (Montebello HS) drew the team to within 8-6 heading into the second half. Consecutive goals by Silvestre Chavez (Downey HS), Abimael Anorve (Mira Costa HS) and Kobe Hurtado (Cerritos HS) drew the game even at 10-10 with 2:28 left in the quarter. However, Saddleback closed out the quarter with three straight goals, with the team only able to get to within a 15-13 score in the final seven seconds after an Allan Jimenez (Schurr HS) goal.  Hurtado scored four times, with Jimenez and Rico each adding three goals, with Axel Pedroza (California HS) leading the defense with four steals. Rene Borja (Schurr HS), who assisted on a goal, made seven blocks from his goalkeeper position. In the loss to the Pirates, Cerritos trailed, 8-2 in the second quarter until Anorve, Pedroza and Jimenez drew the team to 8-5. The deficit became 10-5 in the third quarter until the Falcons scored the next four goals of the game to get to 11-10. But the goal by Anorve with 4:40 left in the game would prove to be the last, with the Pirates scoring an insurance goal with 3:39 left. Anorve scored four of the team's goals, while Borja not only stopped nine shots, but added four steals. Pedroza and Anorve both added three steals.

The second day started with Cerritos in a battle with Los Angeles Valley through the first three periods. The game tied six times through the first three quarters until the Monarchs shut out the Falcons in the fourth quarter to record the 12-8 decision. Anorve led the team with three goals, while four other got on the scoreboard, including Montanez, who scored twice, assisted on two goals and recorded a pair of assists. Borja made seven saves in the game.

A find second half defensive effort led the Falcons to victory over Rio Hondo, as they limited them to just two goals. Cerritos did lead, 5-2 after the first period, and took an 8-6 advantage into halftime. Third quarter goals from Anorve, along with single goals from four others helped the Falcons extend their lead to 14-7 before closing out the game. Jimenez had four goals in the winning cause, while Chavez finished with three. Borja, who made 13 saves through the first three quarters, also assisted on three goals, with Anorve leading the team with four helpers.
