Playing their second game in as many days against one of the top-ranked teams in the state, the Cerritos College softball team was held off the scoreboard in a 5-0 non-conference loss at Cypress College on Friday. The Falcons (16-12), who play four more games next week, will travel to Los Angeles Harbor College on Monday at 3:00 p.m. in a game that was rained out back on March 22.

Cerritos was able to stay close with the defending state champion Chargers (26-3) for the first half of the game and trailed just 1-0. But Cypress scored twice in the fourth and sixth innings to post the win.

In the second inning, freshman third baseman Kayla Hernandez (Santa Fe HS) reached base on an error and then advanced to second base on a single from freshman designated player Deja Sendejas (El Rancho HS). But a fly ball and ground out left both runners on base for the Falcons. They put runners on first and second base in the fourth inning on singles from both freshman outfielder Brianna Spoolstra (Mayfair HS) and Hernandez. Looking to get on the board, Sendejas grounded into an inning ending double play and were turned away again.

Freshman shortstop Tena Spoolstra (Mayfair HS) singled with one out in the sixth inning and stole second base, but was stranded in the team's last scoring chance.

Freshman starting pitcher Sierra Gerdts (Montebello HS) allowed just an unearned run in her 2 2/3 innings of work, but came out after loading the bases with a hit batter and two walks. Freshman Allisyn Udell (Whittier Christian HS) recorded the third out against the Chargers to keep them off the board. Udell remained in the game and surrendered four runs on six hits.
