The Cerritos College softball team broke through for 18 hits against host Glendale College on Tuesday in a 17-0, 5-inning win. The Falcons (1-1) are right back on the field on Wednesday, as they host Santa Ana in their home opener at 2:30 p.m. at Nancy Kelly Field. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday, but has been moved up one day due to the impending rain.
Against the Vaqueros, Cerritos scored in each of the first four innings, with 13 different players collecting at least one hit. At the start of the game, freshman outfielder Haley Davis (Mayfair HS) drew a walk to lead off, advanced to second base on a passed ball and then scored on a base hit by sophomore second baseman Brianna Spoolstra (Mayfair HS).
The runs kept coming in the second inning, which started when sophomore outfielder Victoria Medina (Whittier HS/Rio Hondo College) reached base on an error. After advancing to second base on a fly out, Medina scored on a single by freshman designated player Erica Martinez (Kennedy HS). With two outs, Davis singled home Martinez, while Spoolstra brought home a pair of runs with a single down the right field line.
Sophomore starting pitcher Sierra Gerdts (Montebello HS) earned the win by tossing the first two innings and allowing two singles. Freshman Skyler Swearingen (Mayfair HS) came on and limited Glendale to a single, with sophomore Ally Udell (Whittier Christian HS) recording the final three outs of the game.
Martinez and Medina each added two-run triples in the third inning, with sophomore third baseman Kayla Hernandez (Santa Fe HS) clearing the bases with a three-run triple to close out the scoring in the fourth inning.
On the day, Spoolstra went 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Hernandez, Martinez and sophomore first baseman Keirra Bolinas (Torrance HS) all collected a pair of hits.
