Still trying to work themselves into the postseason picture, the Cerritos College softball team earned a 9-1, 6-inning win over host Compton College on Tuesday. The Falcons evened their South Coast Conference record at 8-8, while they are now 13-14 on the year. The team will play their second of four straight road games on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. when they take on first place El Camino College.

In the win over the Tartars, the Falcons took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, which started with an error on a ball hit by sophomore shortstop Tena Spoolstra (Mayfair HS). After stealing second base, Spoolstra moved to third on a single from freshman outfielder Haley Davis (Mayfair HS). A stolen base by Davis put runners on second and third base for sophomore first baseman Keira Bolinas (Torrance HS), who drove in a run with an infield single. Sophomore outfielder Victoria Medina (Whittier HS/Rio Hondo College) followed with an RBI single of her own, with freshman catcher Erica Martinez (Kennedy HS) bringing in the third run on a fielder's choice. Freshman third baseman Sophia Collazo (Paramount HS) rounded out the scoring in the inning with a base hit.

Sophomore pitcher Sierra Gerdts (Montebello HS) used the offensive output put her at ease in the circle and she tossed the first five innings and allowed one run on five hits to pick up the win. She also reached base twice on a pair of walks.

A pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings allowed the mercy rule to be in effect.

Bolinas, Medina and Collazo led the offense on the day with two hits each, while the team also drew six walks.
