After the first day of the CCCAA State Championships, the Cerritos College wrestling team sits in third place at Fresno City College. The Falcons, the defending state champions, have six of their seven remaining wrestlers competing in the semifinals tomorrow morning, while the other remaining athlete will compete in the consolation rounds. The team has 62.5 team points and trail Sacramento City College, who leads with 96 team points, while second place Fresno City College has 73 points.

125 Pounds - The 2010 state champion in their weight, sophomore Estevan Cabanas (Canyon Springs HS), received a bye in the first round. In his only match of the day, Cabanas recorded a major decision against Tyler Poalillo of Santa Rosa College, 13-5. He will now take on top-seeded Julian Gayton of Fresno City College.
133 Pounds - Freshman Anthony Vargas (Citrus Hill HS), who is the top-seeded wrestler, also received a bye in the first round. He posted a 4-1 win over Isaac Pilgrim of Sacramento City College to reach the semifinals and will square off against Chris Kimball of Palomar College.
141 Pounds - Freshman Richard Pocock (California HS) dropped his two matches of the day and has been eliminated. He opened with an 8-5 setback against Sacramento City's Antonio Jimenez. In the consolation round, Pocock was leading Mario Lopez of Mt. San Antonio, 3-1 heading into the third period. Lopez, the Southern California champion, extended the match to overtime and then nearly posted a pin in the extra minute and finished off Pocock with a 9-3 score.
149 Pounds - Freshman Kody Davis (Chino Valley, AZ HS) was on the wrong end of a 6-4 decision against Reese Chew of Sierra College, sending him to the consolation round. He received a forfeit win to advance when Lassen College's Alex Aniciete, who suffered an injury in his first match and was forced out of the tournament. Davis will take on Chris Vaughn of Sacramento City, with the winner moving one step closer to taking third place.
157 Pounds - The Falcons advanced both of their entires into the semifinals. However, they will be taking on each other, with the winner moving on to the championships and the loser to the consolation round. Top-seeded Aaron Negrete (Calvary Chapel HS) posted a 21-6 technical fall win against Josh Annis of Fresno after receiving a bye in the first round. Freshman Dylan Moreno (Downey HS), who came in fourth place at the SoCal Championships, pinned Kyle Do of Chabot in 1:43 in his forst match and then pinned Noor Kathem of Modesto College in 3:34.
165 Pounds - Cerritos didn't have an entry in this weight.
174 Pounds - After a bye in the first round, freshman Joel Villa (Citrus Hill HS) lost, 12-5 to Stephen Martin of Skyline College. In the consolation round, the SoCal runner-up was eliminated from the state championships when he was pinned in 1:27 by Juan Soto of East Los Angeles College.
184 Pounds - Freshman John Robles (Santa Fe HS) was defeated in his first match, a 6-4 decision to Bill Robinson of Shasta College. His tournament came to a conclusion when his lead against Zach Mitchell of Bakersfield slipped away in the third period and resulted in a 15-12 loss.
197 Pounds - Southern California champion and state runner-up last season, sophomore Oscar Martinez (Corona Centennial HS) found himself trailing Fred Duerr of Santa Rosa, 6-0 in the first period. He found himself on his back and had to fight his way out of danger and scored two points before the end of the first period. He continued to fight and was able to come away with a 10-9 victory. He will take on Sac City's Jason Zecchini in the semifinals.
285 Pounds - Another returning finalist at the state championships last season, sophomore Jesse Gomez (Buena Park HS) was able to pin Josh Davis of Bakersfield in 6:18 to advance. Gomez, who pinned all three of his opponents at the SoCal Championships last weekend, will take on Murrel Anderson of Chabot in the semifinals.
