In a Southwest Conference match on Wednesday night, the Cerritos College wrestling team was the beneficiary of five forfeit wins against visiting Santa Ana College. The end result was a 36-9 win for the #2-ranked Falcons (11-1, 2-0), who will compete next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in a Southwest Conference match at Rio Hondo College.
Of the five matches that were contested, Cerritos won two of them, with the most exciting coming at 184 pounds. Sophomore Blake Moser (Gig Harbor, WA HS) was trailing, 4-2 against Leo Perez with two minutes remaining. Starting the period on the bottom, he was able to get Perez on his back and score a four-point near-fall for a 6-4 advantage with 1:38 remaining. After Perez picked up an escape point with 1:12 left, Moser was able to remain locked up with Perez and ran out the clock for a victory.
The team's other win came at 141 pounds, with freshman Nick Camacho (Paramount HS) posting a 7-5 win. Taking a 4-2 lead after the first period, thanks to a pair of takedowns, Camacho extended his lead against Josh Fuentes to 7-2 with :48 seconds left in the second period. Fuentes was able to earn a two-point reversal with :32 seconds left in the second period and after getting an escape point with 1:06 left in the match, Camacho looked to avoid giving up a late takedown. He was able to fend off Fuentes to earn the win.
Those receiving forfeits included 125-pound Eric Gonzalez (California HS), 165-pount Wyatt Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS), 174-pound Zack Gonzalez (Lakewood HS), 197-pound David Van Weems (Corona Centennial HS) and 285-pound Robert Ceregatti (South Torrance HS).
