Competing in their first tournament of the season, the Cerritos College wrestling team finished in second place at the West Hills Tournament on Saturday. The Falcons, who won one weight class, also recorded a second place and third place, as they compiled 105 team points. They edged out third place Mt. San Antonio College (103.5 points), with Fresno City winning the championship with 197 team points. The team will compete in the Santa Ana Tournament next Saturday.

125 Pounds -  The Falcons had five entries in this weight, with Joshua Mendoza (Warren HS) advancing the furthest. After receiving a bye in the first round, Mendoza defeated Owen Jones of Santa Rosa, 9-5, while a loss to eventual champion Mario Moreno in the quarterfinals, 2-1, sent him to the consolation round. Mendoza was then eliminated by Michael Rodriguez of Fresno City College, 6-3. Three of the other four entries won their first matches before getting defeated and sent to the consolation bracket. Only Navid Mirzaei (Torrance HS) won another match before getting eliminated.

133 Pounds - Freshman Jose Espinoza (Paloma Valley HS) took third place after advancing to the semifinals. After a pair of wins, he was defeated by top-seeded Isaiah Perez of Fresno City College, 8-4, but rebounded to record a 14-12 win over Kyle Jimenez of Fresno City before earning a 5-2 win against Jesse Martinez of Mt. San Antonio in the third place match. Andres Gonzalez (Capistrano Valley HS) won two matches in the consolation rounds before getting pinned by Jared Collison of Bakersfield College.

141 Pounds - Competing at 133 pounds last season, sophomore Joshua Brown (Esperanza HS) captured his first tournament title at a heavier weight. As the top seed, Brown recorded four big wins before capturing the title when sophomore teammate Nick Camacho (Paramount HS) had to default out of the finals due to an injury. Camacho, who was seeded #2, posted a pin and a major decision before coming away with a hard-fought 2-1 win against Anthony Chavez of Fresno City to advance to the finals. The injury prevented the two Falcons from squaring off against each other in the finals.

149 Pounds - Sophomore Devin Daugherty (Cypress HS) was seeded #2, but was upset in his second round match when he was pinned in 4:28. In the consolation rounds, Daugherty pinned his next two opponents and then recorded a 15-0 technical fall before getting outscored, 17-12 by top-seeded Adam Valdez of Mt. San Antonio. Freshman Richard Gurule (Santa Ana Calvary Chapel HS) picked up a pair of wins in the consolation rounds before his loss against Valdez.

157 Pounds - Freshman Larry Rodriguez (Santa Ana Calvary Chapel HS) was one win away from competing for third place, but had to settle for fifth place when he was defeated by Manny Curry of Sacramento City, 7-5. Prior to that match, Drake De La Cruz (Long Beach Millikan HS) was pinned by Curry late in the first period in their match. Rodriguez pinned two of his opponents and posted a technical fall before losing in the semifinals to #2-seeded Jose Paez of West Hills with a late pin.

165 Pounds - The team's lone entry, Jayden Martinez-Gonzalez (North Torrance HS), was defeated his his two matches and was eliminated.

174 Pounds - The Falcons entered two sophomores in the weight class, with Kennith Kirk (Lake Elsinore HS) and Zack Gonzalez (Lakewood HS) squared up to face each other in the consolation round. Gonzalez was able to advance due to an injury to Kirk, who settled for fifth place. In the third place match, Gonzalez was defeated by Cameron Casey of Santa Rosa College, 9-2. In the quarterfinals, Gonzalez defeated Cury, 6-5. Kirk won all three of his matches by pin.
