Traveling to Reno, NV to take part in the Lassen Tournament on Saturday, the Cerritos College wrestling team finished in fifth place with 74.5 team points. The Falcons will close out their conference schedule on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when they host Palomar College.
As a team, Cerritos had five placers, with one reaching the finals and two others taking third place. At 133 pounds, freshman Elijah Flores (Santa Fe HS) earned a pair of 16-0 technical fall wins to reach the championship match. He squared off against Lassen College's Dustin Merlos and came up short in a 6-2 decision. Teammate Roberto Ramirez (Paramount HS) finished in sixth place in the weight class, which included a pair of wins, but ended with a 17-9 setback against Nicholas Arreans of Mt. San Antonio College in the fifth place match.
Locking down third place finishes included sophomore Donovan Chavez (Downey HS) at 165 pounds and sophomore 184-pound Ben Setum (Pacifica HS). Chavez dropped his first match, but responded in the consolation round by recording consecutive 16-0 technical fall wins and capped it off with a 22-5 technical fall victory over Amrit Cheeme of Santa Rosa College. As for Setum, he pinned his first opponent before a loss in the semifinals set him up against Abraham Galicia in the third place match, where he recorded a medical forfeit win. At 174 pounds, freshman Dylan Trevino (Calvary Chapel HS) earned a pin by pin in his first match, but suffered defeats in his next two and settled for fourth place.
