After going through their first unbeaten and untied regular season in school history, the Cerritos College women's soccer team has been seeded #1 for the Southern California Regional Playoffs. They will host the winner of the match between #16-seeded Los Angeles Valley (13-5-2) and #17-seeded Los Angeles Pierce (12-5-3) at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Falcons have a long history facing Los Angeles Pierce, and have gone 6-0-1 since 2008 and outscored them 19-2 in those games, including a 1-0 win over the Monarchs last year. Cerritos also defeated LA Pierce in the playoffs in 2010 and 2008.
The Falcons (20-0-0), who had their five-year streak of CCCAA State Championships snapped last season, have come back with their best season in school history. Cerritos, who is also ranked #1 in the country and the state, have outscored their opponents, 124-1 this season and have 19 shutouts, including 17 in a row. They completed their South Coast Conference South Division campaign outscoring teams, 66-0. They concluded the regular season with a streak of 34 consecutive regular season victories dating back to 2017 and have a current 30-match win streak in conference play going back to 2015. Finally, the Falcons have a 51-match undefeated streak in conference play (50-0-1) going back to a 2014 loss vs. East Los Angeles.
Boasting the top two goal scorers in the state in sophomores Sydney Carr (El Modena HS/UC Irvine) and Serena Camacho (Los Osos HS/UC Irvine), the Falcons have been averaging six goals a game. Carr, who set a new school record with her 44 goals on the year, also leads the state in points (108), while her 20 assists rank her fourth in the state. Camacho, who has tallied 31 goals this year, is second in the state with 23 helpers. Freshman Valeria Corrilo (Dominguez HS) has been another offensive threat and has posted 15 goals and 18 assists, with most of her offensive output coming after returning All-American Mia Ramirez (Torrance HS) was lost for the season with an injury. Sophomore goalkeeper Deisy Rodriguez (Katella HS) has been able to record a clean scoresheet all season, and it's mainly due to her stellar defense in front of her. Cerritos controls the ball for the majority of a the game, and when an opponent gets into Falcon territory, the defense has held them at bay.
If the Falcons take on Los Angeles Valley, they will be facing the third place team out of the Western State Conference South Division. Their leading scorer, Karla Lopez has posted 12 goals and seven assists on the season, while Danielle Tilton has accounted for eight goals and a team-leading eight assists. Goalkeeper Isabel Kiledjian has played every minute and comes into the playoffs with a 1.05 goals against average and eight shutouts.
Cerritos will have to contend with the duo of Keyonna Hill (29 goals) and Gissel Cruz (20 goals, 19 assists) if they take on Los Angeles Pierce, who came in second place in the Western State Conference South Division. In addition to that duo, Diana Millan leads the state with 28 assists and has also scored five times. The Brahmas have used two different goalies during the season, with Iliana Yanez making 14 starts and recording a 1.44 goals against average. Valerie Mojica has started 12 matches and has a 1.33 goals against average, while the duo have combined for seven shutouts.
