In their toughest South Coast Conference match of the season, the Cerritos College women's tennis team was defeated by Mt. San Antonio College, 7-2 on Tuesday. The Falcons (6-3, 2-1) dropped several close matches on the day, which could have changed the overall outcome. They get a chance to rebound on Thursday when they host El Camino College in a 2:00 p.m. conference match.
The Mounties (10-0, 3-0) won four of the six singles matches to take a huge advantage into doubles play. At the top of the singles madder, freshman Taylor Heath (Cerritos HS) had her hands full with Connie Aranguiz and dropped a 3-6, 3-6 decision. Also dealing with a tough opponent, freshman Anastasia Khomyachenko (Sochi, Russia) suffered just her second loss of the season with a 1-6, 1-6 loss to Pyper Brown.
Keeping the Falcons in the match were freshman Mariia Yatsenko (School 328, Ukraine), who rebounded from a difficult second set to defeat Kristen Canones, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Also posting a win was sophomore Merli Alcasid (Gahr HS) in the #6 position, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles play, Heath and Yatsenko dropped a tight 9-7 decision in the #1 match, while Khomyachenko and sophomore Stef Flores (Golden Valley Charter HS) were defeated, 8-6. Cerritos needed to win all three doubles matches to pull out the team victory.
