In their first competition of the season, the Cerritos College women's tennis team fought back against NCAA DIII Chapman University and posted a 5-4 win on Wednesday. The Falcons (1-0), who were scheduled to host Grossmont College on Friday, had the match postponed due to impending bad weather. They will host Irvine Valley College at 2:00 p.m. next Tuesday.
Playing shorthanded, due to the absence of sophomore Danielle Pastor (Bishop Montgomery HS) the Falcons were still able to pull out the win against Chapman. As a result, Cerritos entered the match forfeiting team points at the #6 singles and #3 doubles matches due to having only five remaining players.
The earned a pair of doubles wins to help their comeback, as freshmen Petra Such (Gyula Illyés, Hungary) and Diviana Bravo (Unidad Educativa Rosa de Jesús Cordero, Ecuador) pulled out an 8-6 win in the #1 match, while sophomores Elizabeth Aceves (Downey HS) and Mona Navalta (Norwalk HS) teamed up for an 8-3 win.
The Falcons secured the team win with three straight set wins in the top half of the ladder. Such, playing at #1, earned a strong 6-1, 6-1 win, while Bravo moved into Pastor's #2 position and recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win. Aceves clinched the team win with her 6-3, 6-2 victory.
