W. Tennis: Cerritos improves to 4-0 in conference with win

On Thursday, the Cerritos College women's tennis team improved to 4-0 in South Coast Conference play after a 9-0 win over host Rio Hondo College. The win by the Falcons (16-1) was also their 14th in a row, while they also lead the state in wins on the season. The shutout was also the 13th of the year, and their eighth in the last nine matches. The team will host Fullerton College (7-8) in a non-conference match at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

In the first five singles matches, the Falcons lost just two games, with the trio of sophomore Petra Such (Illyes Gyula, Hungary), along with freshmen Kseniia Prokopchuk (School 45, Ukraine) and Moa Lindstrom (Dragonskolans Elitidrottgymnasium, Sweden) each recording 6-0, 6-0 wins. At the top of the ladder, sophomore Lisa Suzuki (Fujimigaoka, Japan/Seward County (KS) CC), along with sophomore #5 player Diviana Bravo (Rosa de Jesus Cordero, Ecuador), surrendered just one game. In the final match of the day, sophomore Mary Navalta (Norwalk HS) battled back for a three-set win, 4-6, 7-5, 10-7.

The doubles pairing of Suzuki and Prokopchuk remained undefeated (14-0) after an 8-0 win, while Such and Lindstrom posted an 8-1 win to improve to 12-1 as a doubles tandem. As for Bravo and Navalta, they recorded an 8-2 victory.
