For the second time in three seasons, the Cerritos College women's tennis team has advanced to the CCCAA Team State Championship match. The Falcons (24-1), ranked #1 in the state, defeated #3-seeded Glendale College, 5-0 and will now look to win their second team state championship. The team will face De Anza College, the Northen California champion, on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Pierpont Racquet Club in Ventura. Back in 2016, Cerritos defeated De Anza College for their first-ever CCCAA Team State Championship.
The Falcons, who defeated the Vaqueros, 9-0 in their first match of the season, swept through the doubles matches to take a commanding 3-0 team score lead heading into singles action. The closest doubles match came at #2, as sophomore Petra Such (Illyes Gyula, Hungary) and freshman Moa Lindstrom (Dragonskolans Elitidrottgymnasium, Sweden) posted an 8-5 win. They led the entire way, but had trouble shaking Miah Webb and Sabrina Subero. In the #3 match, the Cerritos duo of sophomore Itzi Torres (ITESM CEM, Mexico/Kansas Wesleyan University) and Diviana Bravo (Rosa de Jesus Cordero, Ecuador) held a close 4-3 lead, but went on to win the next four games for an 8-3 victory.
Freshman Kseniia Prokopchuk (School 45, Ukraine), who teamed with sophomore Lisa Suzuki (Fujimigaoka, Japan/Seward County, KS CC) for an 8-2 doubles win, also accounted for one of the singles wins, recording a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the #3 position. Bravo, who plays at #6 singles, locked down the team win with her 6-0, 6-1 victory.
