Volleyball: Cerritos responds with five-set win

Losses in their last three matches, the Cerritos College volleyball team fought back against host East Los Angeles College on Friday to win the final two sets for a South Coast Conference victory. The Falcons trailed, 21-25, 26-24, 21-25 before escaping the fourth set with a 25-23 win and went on for a 15-9 win in the fifth set to take the match. The team will host Chaffey College at 6:00 p.m. in their final South Coast Conference crossover match.

Leading Cerritos in their comeback win was sophomore Monica Vega (South Gate HS), who registered a career-high 22 kills to go along with 18 digs and three service aces. Joining her in helping the team with the win was sophomore Jasmine McNeal (Long Beach Poly HS), who contributed 10 kills, four block assists and one solo block, with seldom-used sophomore Nicole Flores (Firebaugh HS) stepping up to contribute six kills.

Working in the back row, sophomore Rocio Rojo-Perez (Bellflower HS) led the team with 19 digs and added two service aces, with freshman Daisy Segura (Cerritos HS) providing three service aces. Sophomore setter Lorinet Marquez (Cerritos HS/Providence, CA College) accounted for 45 assists, four digs and two block assists, with sophomore Dymond Johnson (Gahr HS/Cypress College) posting 15 digs to help keep rallies alive.
