W. Water Polo: Post-season awards bestowed upon Falcons

After a season in which the Cerritos College women's water polo team qualified for the Southern California Regional Playoffs, the team had two players earn All-American honors. Freshman Kate De La Mora (Schurr HS), who finished sixth in the state with 88 goals, along with freshman Mayra Olivas (Montebello HS), who led the state and set a school record with 105 steals, were both named 1st Team All-American. Sophomore teammate Lizbeth Gomez (Schurr HS), who concluded the season with 83 assists, which is far and away the best single-season mark in school history and concluded her career with a school-record 116 assists, was named 2nd Team All-Southern California.

Both De La Mora and Olivas also earned 1st Team All-South Coast Conference recognition, with Gomez and freshman Carolina Medrano (Schurr HS) voted 2nd Team all-conference. In addition to her assist total, Gomez was second on the team with 60 steals and scored 38 goals, while Medrano posted the second most goals on the team (59) to go along with 36 assists and 42 steals. Olivas recorded the third most goals on the Falcons with 44 and also added 31 assists.

The team also handed out team awards, with De La Mora named the Offensive Player of the Year, with Olivas the Defensive Player of the Year. Medrano received the Falcon of the Year, while freshman Lizbeth Ramirez (Sunny Hills HS) was voted the team's Most Improved Player. The team's Breakout Player of the Year was freshman Karol Martinez (Warren HS), who scored eight of her 15 goals in the final five games, which also included seven assists. Ramirez started all 27 games and produced 12 goals, 13 assists and 29 steals.
