Over the weekend, the Cerritos College women's water polo team won all four of their games at the Citrus Tournament. They opened up on Friday with an 18-2 win over East Los Angeles College and followed that with a 9-5 victory over Los Angeles Valley College. The Falcons (13-3) earned an 18-8 win over American River College to start Saturday and concluded it with a 12-0 shutout over San Diego Miramar College. The four wins extended their winning streak to eight in a row, while it was the first shutout for Cerritos since a 15-0 win over East LA at the Citrus Tournament last year. The Falcons will travel to Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. South Coast Conference game.
Cerritos vs. East Los Angeles: With this also serving as a conference game, the Falcons opened up a 7-0 first period lead and led 10-0 before the Huskies finally got on the board in the third period. Freshman Mia Carbajal (Schurr HS) scored four of her team-leading five goals to help the team out to their 10-0 advantage, with freshman Catherine Aguilar (Downey HS) accounting for three goals in the win. The trio of Carolina Medrano (Schurr HS), Amy Cervantes (Montebello HS/East Los Angeles College) and Summer Casanover (La Mirada HS) all posted two goals, while Medrano and Karol Martinez (Warren HS) each assisted on three goals. Sophomore Mayra Olivas (Montebello HS), who led the state in steals last season, recorded four, and was matched by Aguilar. Freshman goalies April Nuno (Cerritos HS) and Haili Snook (Downey HS) combined for four saves.
Cerritos vs. Los Angeles Valley: Carbajal and Cervantes accounted for all five first period goals against the Monarchs, as the Falcons took a 5-1 lead. Scoring the only goal in the second period, Carbajal gave Cerritos a 6-1 lead at halftime. Nuno came up with 11 saves to keep the team in front, while the defense finished with 11 steals. Medrano and Olivas combined for seven steals, with Carbajal scoring six of the team's goals. Assisting on four of the goals was Cervantes, who also put two goals in the net.
Cerritos vs. American River: Hitting the 18-goal mark for the second time over the weekend, the Falcons saw the Beavers open the scoring before countering with six of the next seven goals. Putting some distance between themselves and American River, Carbajal and Cervantes opened the second half with goals to make it a 10-4 advantage, with seven players putting their name on the scoresheet by the final buzzer. Cervantes finished with five goals, while freshman Gabby Arenas (Montebello HS) posted four goals, with Carbajal winding up with three. Olivas had a solid game with two goals and four assists, with Cervantes assisting on seven goals in the game. Carbajal also had four steals and drew four ejections, with Nuno recording six saves.
Cerritos vs. San Diego Miramar: Limiting the Jets to just one official shot on goal, the Falcon defense posted 15 steals, with Carbajal (four) and Medrano (three) leading a team of nine players that recorded at least one steal. Offensively, Cerritos worked the shot clock down to single digits before attempting any shots and held a 5-0 lead at halftime. They scored seven more times in the third quarter, but did not add to their total in the fourth quarter. Olivas and Arenas each had a trio of goals, with Medrano, Carbajal and Cervantes each putting two in the net. With her offensive output over the weekend, Carbajal has moved into ninth in the state with 50 goals, while Cervantes now sits in second place in assists with 51.
