Hosting Westcliff University in their first dual of the season, the Cerritos College women's wrestling team posted a 39-9 win, which included six wins by forfeit. The Falcons (1-1) will travel to Vanguard University of another dual next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
The six forfeits secured the team victory for Cerritos, with four matches to be contested. At 117 pounds, freshman Megan Sognefest (University HS) found herself down, 2-1 early in the first of two three-minute periods. She scored a takedown and near-fall to open a 5-2 lead and then added another takedown with 1:14 remaining in the first period to extend her lead to 7-2. By the end of the period, the lead was 11-3 after another near-fall and a reversal. She was able to close out the game with a quick reversal, which gave her a 10-point lead and victory.
In the most exciting match of the night, freshman 145-pound Saquoia Dubuque (Big Bear HS) had her hands full with Westcliff's Berlyn Davis, who opened a 6-0 first period lead and seemed to have the match in control. Davis added a two-point near-fall was was two points away from ending the match. However, Dubuque scored a takedown prior to the end of the first period for a little breathing room. She opened the second period with a takedown less than a minute into the second period, which quickly became a pin, as she got both of Davis' shoulders on the mat for the win.
Westcliff posted wins in the two upper weight matches, with Cerritos winning two of the three exhibition matches. At 180 pounds, Westcliff's Kyree Rubio, who registered a pin during the regulation match, took on freshman Analize Lopez (Downey HS) in the exhibition. Leading most of the match, Rubio lost her momentum and Lopez was able to get her shoulders down in the second period to win by pin.
