W. Cross Country: Cerritos excels at SoCal Preview Meet

Getting a look at 26 other community colleges in Southern California, the Cerritos College women's cross country team turned in a strong fourth place showing at the Southern California Preview Meet at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa on Saturday. Dealing with scorching 100+ degree temperatures, the Falcons had the fourth-fastest runners, as they compiled 107 team points and trailed only Orange Coast College (56 team points), Glendale College (74) and Moorpark College (96), while edging South Coast Conference opponent Mt. San Antonio College, who placed fifth with 137 team points.
Sophomore Karina Sanchez (Warren HS) turned in the best finish ever for a Cerritos runner at the Preview Meet, as her time of 19:17.90 was good for fourth place out of the 198 runners and was just shy of placing third, as Megan McNalley of Moorpark crossed the finish line in 19:17.13. Staying in a pack throughout the race to come in 25th through 27th place on the day were sophomore Julia Plecnik (St. Joseph HS), sophomore Maira Solis (Roosevelt HS) and freshman Isabel Medina (Paramount HS). Plecnik ran the 5K race in 20:06,52, while Solis was right next to her at 20:06.745 with Medina finishing in 20:15.73. The final three runners competing for the Falcons consisted of freshman Kaela Crone (Kennedy HS; 34th place; 20:34.74), freshman Amineh Beltran (Warren HS; 37th place; 20:41.22) and freshman Kathia Avila (Cerritos HS; 40th place; 20:47.27).

In the overflow race, the remaining six runners finished in second place with 46 team points and trailed only the host Pirates, who finished the sweep with 29 team points. Freshman Patsy Hurley (Mark Keppel HS) placed third overall with a time of 21:06.64, while the duo of Natalie Lenarduzzi (Marshall HS) and Sara Gonzalez (El Rancho HS) came in fifth place (21:15.94) and seventh place (21:51.56), respectively. Sophomore Alexis Perez (Cantwell HS) finished the 5K race in 23:01.15 to place 15th overall, while freshman Jasmine Ayala (Lakewood HS), who came in 21st place in 23:31.59 and freshman Angelyca Osnaya-Tyson (Long Beach Poly HS), whose time of 24:26.61 earned her a 29th place finish.
