Getting a look at their South Coast Conference competition on Friday, the Cerritos College men's swimming team saw how they were going to stack up this season. Swimming in the SCC Pentathlon at Mt. San Antonio College, the Falcons saw sophomore Rodrigo Baca (Kennedy HS) lead the way for the Falcons.

A CCCAA State Qualifier in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke last season, Baca recorded a first and second place in those events, respectively. In the 100-yard butterfly, Baca defeated a field of 73 swimmers with a time of 54.32, with teammate Jesus Murguia (Downey HS) finishing in 11th place with his clocking of 58.95.

Baca just missed out on winning the 100-yard backstroke, as his time of 56.41 put him in second place behind Mt. San Antonio College's Nathan Chow at 54.56. Murguia also competed in the race and recorded another 11th place finish with a time of 1:02.15. The biggest race of the day, the 100-yard freestyle, had Baca turn in a third place time of 50.35. Freshman Jonathan Butz (Los Altos HS) finished in 12th place at 52.37, with freshman Jorge De Loera (St. Pius/St. Matthias Academy HS) posting an 18th place time of 54.08. There were 80 swimmers in the race.

The 100-yard breaststroke saw Baca come in 14th place with a time of 1:09.83. The day opened with the quartet of sophomore Joshua Guzman (Warren HS), De Loera, Baca and Butz recording a time of 1:48.88 to place third in the 200-yard medley relay.

The team will swim in the Golden West Invitational next Friday.
