M. Tennis: Defending champs sweep San Diego City

Looking to advance to the CCCAA Men's Tennis Dual Meet State Championships for the second year in a row, Cerritos College defeated visiting San Diego City College, 5-0 on Tuesday. The Falcons, the #1-seed and defending state champions, will host #3 seed College of the Desert, who defeated #2-seeded Irvine Valley College, 5-2 in the other Southern California Regional Semifinal match. The championship match is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday on the Falcon Tennis Courts.

The Falcons put themselves in great position after sweeping all three doubles matches. The top of the doubles ladder tandem of freshman Arthur Toledo (Goliath Academy, FL HS) and sophomore Bruno Duarte (Centro Educacional Rogêdo, Brazil) earned a convincing 8-0 win, while freshman Lucas Legrand (Marie, France) and sophomore Jan Simon (Gymnasium Auf Der Karthause, Germany/Cypress College) secured an 8-3 doubles victory. Control of the match came when sophomores Tomas Bella (Colegio Mallinckrodt, Argentina/Cypress College) and Nico De La Pena (Downey HS) were able to secure an 8-6 win over Rafael Maniego and Jonah Kim.

In singles play, De La Pena didn't waste any time in his #6 match, as he earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jose Ramirez Chao, while Legrand locked down the team win with his 6-2, 6-1 decision in the #4 spot on the ladder. Also finishing at the same time was Simon, who earned a 6-4 6-1 win. Cerritos took the first set in the other two singles matches, while the third was getting ready to go into a tie-breaker at the time the match was clinched.
