Complete Brackets

For the second week in a row, the Cerritos College wrestling team finished in second place at a tournament. On Saturday, the Falcons compiled 108 team points at the Santa Ana Tournament with their A Team and trailed only Fresno City College, who had 178.5 points with their top team. Collectively, the Cerritos finished with 180 team points from their four groups of wrestlers, while the Rams had 243 team points. The team will open Southwest Conference action on October 10 with a 7:00 p.m. dual match at Palomar College.

On the day, the Falcons had a pair of individual champions in freshman 125-pound Roland Dominguez (Downey HS) and sophomore 141-pound Joshua Brown (Esperanza HS), while they also had a trio of third place and fourth place finishers. By contrast, Fresno City won five of the 10 weight classes and added three second place finishers.

125 Pounds -  Unseeded at the tournament, Dominguez pinned his first three opponents before capping off the day with a 10-2 win over top-seeded Mario Moreno of Palomar College. Along the way, Dominguez pinned Dat Thoai of Sacramento City College (1:59), Marcus Hutcherson of Bakersfield College (1:27) and Louie Bravo of Fresno City College in 1:42. Also competing for the Falcons was freshman Joshua Mendoza (Warren HS), who took fourth place. He opened with a 17-2 technical fall over Sam Galdamez of Santa Ana College and then defeated teammate Isaiah Perez (Sonora HS), 6-0 to reach the semifinals. He dropped a 5-3 decision to Moreno and then suffered a 7-5 setback against Mt. San Antonio College's Zach Cunningham.

133 Pounds - A pair of freshmen reached the semifinals, but both were defeated and sent to the consolation round. Jose Espinoza (Paloma Valley HS) went on to pin Kyle Jimenez of Fresno City in 6:50 to compete in the third place match, where he was defeated by Oliver Rivero of Santa Ana. As for Andres Gonzalez (Capistrano Valley HS), he picked up a pin in his first match and eventually lost, 11-7 to Raul Ortiz of Palomar. He was then a victim of Rivero, who defeated him, 13-4 with a shot at Espinoza on the line for third place. Sophomore Richard Bautista (Lakewood HS) picked up three wins on the day.

141 Pounds -  Top-seeded Brown recorded a pair of technical fall wins in his first two matches before defeating Aaron Diaz of Mt. SAC, 8-3 to reach the finals. He was set to take on Josh Fuentes of Santa Ana, but due to an injury, the match didn't take place and Brown was awarded the title. Sophomore teammate Nick Camacho (Paramount HS), seeded #2, who won his first two matches, went on to lose, 3-1 to Fuentes, which was also the match that caused the injury. Camacho dropped into the consolation round, where he suffered a 4-2 loss to Palomar's Erick Marquez, who Camacho defeated, 8-4 in their first meeting earlier in the day.

149 Pounds - Sophomore Devin Daugherty (Cypress HS) was one of three Falcon entries, and he reached the semifinals after a pair of wins. He was then pinned by eventual champion Daniel Ruiz of Fresno City and then suffered a 10-8 loss to Sacramento City College's Andrew Saucedo in the consolation round with a shot at third place on the line. The other two entries went 0-2 on the day.

157 Pounds - As the only one of four entries to advance past the second round, freshman Larry Rodriguez (Santa Ana Calvary Chapel HS) reached the semifinals after a pair of wins, before getting pinned by eventual champion Ruben Garcia of Fresno City College. In the consolation round, Rodriguez rebounded to pin Miguel Gallardo of Sacramento City in 2:57 and then defeated Jessy Diaz of Palomar, 14-9 to claim third place. Sophomore Nick Dozier (Irvine HS) dropped his first round match, but went on to win three straight consolation matches before getting eliminated, 9-5 by Gallardo.

165 Pounds - Suffering a tough 14-12 loss in the quarterfinals to Palomar's Mace Anderson, sophomore Kennith Kirk (Lake Elsinore HS) stormed back to pin three of his final four opponents to come in third place. His first opponent was freshman teammate Jayden Martinez-Gonzalez (North Torrance HS), who he pinned in 1:21 and then needed just 1:12 to pin Emmanuel Zepeda of East Los Angeles College. An injury default win advanced him to the third place match, where he finished day on a high note when he pinned Anderson in 6:15.

174 Pounds - On the heels of reaching the championship match, sophomore Zack Gonzalez (Lakewood HS) came up short, 3-2 against Abel Garcia of Sacramento City. In the consolation round, Gonzalez defeated Denny Jordan of Sanramento City, 12-4 before earning a third place finish when East LA's Gabriel Rodriguez had to default from the match due to an injury. Rodriguez faced off against freshman Angel Jauregui (Coachella Valley HS) in the consolation round, where he defeated him, 11-6.

184 Pounds - The lone entry in the weight classification, freshman Jarrod Nunez (Mayfair HS) reached the semifinals, where he was defeated by eventual champion Steven Abbott of Sacramento City by a technical fall. In the consolation round, Nunez rebounded for an 11-3 win over Victor Bryson of Cuesta College before he was defeated, 18-2 by Dean Jerrin of Fresno City in the third place match.

197 Pounds - Freshman Deniss Hernandes (Beaumont HS) opened the day with a 16-11 win over Jesse Story of Cuesta, but was then pinned by eventual champion Adrian Godinez of Bakersfield College. In the consolation round, Hernandes ended his day when he was pinned by Palomar's Kalani Sorenson.

285 Pounds - Seeded #2 for the tournament, freshman Randy Gonzalez (Lakewood HS) pinned Tony Sperske of Cuesta in 4:24 before losing a close 3-1 match against Oscar Solano of Palomar. Now in the consolation rounds, Gonzalez saw his day end prematurely when he was defeated, 5-2 by Christian Alvizures of Sacramento City. Freshman Ivan Garcia (Paramount HS) was the only other entry to win a match, as he picked up a 6-2 victory over Erick Colin of Moorpark College before getting eliminated in his next match.
