Competing in the Bill Musick Open at Fresno City College on Saturday, Cerritos College 285-pound freshman Randy Gonzalez (Lakewood HS) won the championship in overtime. The Falcons will take a week off before they compete in the East Los Angeles Brawl on November 17.
Seeded #2 for the tournament, Gonzalez pinned his first two opponents before he defeated Daniel Garcia of Victor Valley, 6-2 to advance to the finals. Taking on top-seeded Angel Mariscal of Fresno City College, the match was tied after three periods and went into overtime. Both wrestlers recorded escape points in regulation for a 1-1 score until Gonzalez was able to record a two-point reversal during his overtime period where he started on the bottom. Thought to be on his way to a championship match was sophomore 141-pound Nick Camacho (Paramount HS), who was also seeded #2. After an 11-0 win over Jayce Cunha of Embry-Riddle, Camacho recorded a technical fall over Sacramento City's Brian Galeno, 19-1 to advance to the semifinals. In that match, Camacho suffered an injury against Luis Ramos of Fresno City College and had to injury default down to sixth place in the tournament.
At 149 pounds, freshman Larry Rodriguez (Santa Ana Calvary Chapel HS) was seeded #1 and posted a pin in his first match and then defeated teammate Richard Gurule (Santa Ana Calvary Chapel HS), 6-1 to advance to the finals. However, like Camacho, Rodriguez had to injury default in the championships and came in second place. Also in that weight class, sophomore Devin Daugherty (Cypress HS) opened with a 16-0 win over Robert Gonzalez of Simpson College before getting pinned by eventual champion Darrein Javier of Mt. San Antonio. In the consolation round, Daugherty pinned teammate Anthony Perez (South Torrance HS) and then posted a 7-2 win over Gurule to advance to the third place match. Locked up in a tight battle with #2-seeded Julian Beltran of Fresno, Daugerty came away with a 10-9 victory.
Sophomore Zack Gonzalez (Lakewood HS) earned a spot in the championship match at 174 pounds before getting beaten, 11-5 by Daniel Butler of Embry-Riddle. Seeded #2, Gonzalez opened with a 9-0 shutout over Kawena Esperas of Lassen College and then needed just 1:00 to pin Jason Blakenship of Shasta College in the semifinals. Also placing third at the tournament was freshman 125-pound Roland Dominguez (Downey HS), who advanced to the semifinals before losing, 5-2 to eventual champion Eddie Flores of Cal State San Bernardino. Dominguez opened the tournament with a pin and in the consolation bracket, defeated top-seeded Joey Delgado of Fresno State, 4-0 and then capped off the day with a 5-1 win in the third place match against Josh Nira of Embry-Riddle.
