For the fourth time in school history, a member of the Cerritos College women's soccer team has been named the National Player of the Year. After tying the CCCAA state record for goals in a season (47) and setting a new record for most points (114), sophomore Sydney Carr (El Modena HS/UC Irvine) was named the United Soccer Coaches Women's Soccer National Player of the Year among Division III (non-scholarship) schools. Joining her on the All-American team was sophomore goalkeeper Deisy Rodriguez (Katella HS), who was a 2nd Team selection.
The honorees will be formally recognized for their accomplishments at the United Soccer Coaches All-America Ceremony & Reception on Jan. 12, 2019 at McCormick Place West in Chicago in conjunction with the 2019 United Soccer Coaches Convention.
"When I got the call from my coach I couldn't believe what he was telling me," said Carr, who has signed with NCAA Division I Seattle University. "It's honestly just a blessing to be named to this title. I came to Cerritos at one of my lowest points in my life and to be ending the year with all these accomplishments is a great honor. To everyone that has been there to support me, thank you because I wouldn't have done it with out you."
In scoring 47 goals this season, Carr scored at least one goal in an amazing 20 games in a row. She had 14 multiple-goal games, which included scoring four times in five games and also produced three double-digit scoring games. Carr also had a six-game streak where she scored at least two goals. A fine passer, Carr also dished out 20 assists including a season-high three helpers in two games.
"Sydney is just a special talent," said head coach Ruben Gonzalez. "She is blessed with a lot of speed and a lot of force and I think she just makes the game easier for everyone else around her. It's a well-deserved honor for her."
Rodriguez set a new school record for most shutouts in a season (20) and surrendered only one goal all season. She led the state with an 0.04 goals against average.
Carr joins Nayeli Requejo (2014), Claudia Lopez (2013) and Corina Villegas (2008) and Cerritos players who were named the National Player of the Year.
