It hasn't been a season Cerritos College women's soccer fans have been accustomed to over the last 15 years. But on Friday, the Falcons (3-3-1) put together one of their best all-around games this season in a 2-0 non-conference win at San Bernardino Valley College (4-2-1). The victory by Cerritos snapped the Wolverines 74-match regular season home field unbeaten streak. The team will start South Coast Conference play on Tuesday with a 4:00 p.m. home match against Long Beach City College. It will also be the first home game of the season for the Falcons.
Playing one of the toughest pre-season schedules (all on the road), the seven teams the Falcons faced this year have a combined 35-15-11 record.
Striking early against the Wolverines, sophomore Valeria Corrilo (Dominguez HS) was attacking past midfield and fed a pass to freshman McKenzie Cooper (Temescal Canyon HS), who fired a shot from the left side and past goalkeeper Taylor Milner for a 1-0 advantage.
An incident with five minutes left in the first half led to red cards for both teams, leaving 10 players on the field for both squads the remainder of the game. Freshman Lucia Yanez (El Rancho HS), who has three goals on the year, will not be available for the team's next game.
Freshman goalie Melanie Corona (El Rancho HS) was up to the challenge against the Wolverines and turned away the five shots she faced on the night. Assisting her on defense were America Ontiveros (Santa Ana HS), Briana Flores (North Torrance HS), Aubree Stevens (Pacifica HS) and Jaylene Valentin (La Serna HS).
Holding off any offensive attack from San Bernardino Valley, the Falcons scored an insurance goal in extra time when freshman Alessandria Ramirez (Warren HS) sent a beautiful shot and scored on a free kick from 45 yards out.
