Following a season-opening loss to Mt. San Jacinto College on Wednesday, the Cerritos College volleyball team rebounded with a 25-22, 25-19, 25-13 non-conference win at Santa Ana College on Friday. The Falcons (1-1) will now travel to Fullerton College on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference match.
Trailing 8-7 in the first game, the Falcons scored four straight points to take an 11-8 lead and after the score was knotted a 11-11, three more points gave them a 14-11 lead they would not relinquish. Freshman Susan Suski (Cerritos HS), who led the team with seven kills, accounted for three of them in the first game, including one that broke a 21-21 tie and propelled them to a win in the first set.
The second set was a back and forth affair with Cerritos taking one-point leads seven different times and after opening up a 9-7 advantage, never looked back as they pulled away for their 25-19 win. Sophomore Andrea Garrett (Cerritos HS) powered three of her five kills in the second game, while she also led all players with six blocks. Sophomore Latia Peters (Hesperia HS) put away three of her five kills in the clinching set, with freshman Jasmin Mitchell (Warren HS) coming off the bench to add a pair of kills and a block.
The trio of freshman Aniga Aiono (Lakewood HS), along with sophomore Gloria Chang (Bellflower HS) and freshmanAshley Castro (Santa Fe HS) combined for 17 assists, while Aiono added four service aces and three kills. As a team, the Falcons committed just six kill errors on the night.
