Volleyball: Losing streak extended after tournament

The Cerritos College volleyball team saw their losing streak extend to five matches in a row after they dropped all four of the matches at the San Diego Mesa Tournament over the weekend. The Falcons (1-6) were defeated by the host Griffins (17-25, 14-25, 19-25) and San Bernardino Valley (18-25, 28-26, 20-25, 24-26) on the first day and then dropped a 21-25, 23-25, 19-25 decision to South Coast Conference rival Long Beach City College and then closed out with a 21-25, 25-21, 13-25, 26-28 match to Cuesta College. Cerritos will now compete in the San Diego City Tournament this Saturday in their final non-conference competition before the start of conference play.

Despite the four losses, there were several outstanding performances by Falcon players, including sophomore outside hitter Latia Peters(Hesperia HS), who recorded 10 kills, while freshman setter Aniga Aiono (Lakewood HS) finished with 12 assists, nine digs and four service aces against Grossmont. Peters came right back against San Bernardino Valley and led the team with 12 kills, with freshman outside hitter Susan Suski (Cerritos HS) accounting for six kills, 17 digs and five service aces. Aiono contributed 15 assists and three service aces, while sophomore middle blocker Andrea Garrett (Cerritos HS) posted three blocks, three kills and two service aces. Freshman libero Yazmin Rios (Paramount HS) also stepped in to finish with 13 digs, with sophomore setter Gloria Chang (Bellflower HS) adding 12 assists and six digs.

In the loss to Long Beach City, Peters paced the team with 11 kills, while Garrett had nine kills, five service aces and three blocks. The duo of Chang (nine assists, three digs) and Aiono (six assists, six digs) directed the offense, with Suski finishing with six kills and three blocks, while freshmen Ashley Castro (Santa Fe HS) had nine digs and Stephanie Ortiz (Huntington Park College Ready Academy HS) posting six digs and three kills. The tournament concluded with Peters (15 kills), Suski (12 kills, 10 digs, three service aces), Garrett (10 kills, six blocks), Aioni (seven kills, 18 assists, 13 digs, four service aces) and freshman Marissa Sunio (Cerritos HS), who had seven digs, all playing well.
