Volleyball: Team sees win streak come to an end

The Cerritos College volleyball team and won five straight matches heading into the contest against El Camino College on Friday. But the Falcons (5-6, 2-1) were swept by the Warriors, 14-25, 22-25, 15-25 in a battle for first place in the South Coast Conference. The team will now travel to Long Beach City College for a 6:00 p.m. match on Wednesday.

In each of the three games, Cerritos held leads or were tied. They were knotted at 9-9 in the first set before El Camino ran off 11 of the next 12 points for a 20-10 lead and put the game away. The Falcons led numerous times in the second game, including a 22-20 advantage, but could not hold off the Warriors, who scored the final five points. Even in the third game, they led 6-5, but ran out of steam against a powerful opponent.

Freshman Brianna Gutierrez (St. Matthias HS) led the team with seven kills, while freshman Jasmynne Roberts (Long Beach Poly HS) contributed five kills. As for freshman Valerie Montoya (La Mirada HS) her six kills came in the first two games, with sophomore Ashley Castro (Santa Fe HS) posting 17 digs from the back row. Freshman setter Michelle Barba (Downey HS) dished out 15 assists and had five digs, with Gutierrez also registering a pair of blocks at the net.
