Volleyball: Win sets Falcons up for battle for second place

The Cerritos College volleyball team maintained at least a share of second place in the South Coast Conference with their 25-10, 25-20, 25-12 win over host Los Angeles Trade-Tech College on Wednesday night. The Falcons (12-8, 9-3) are locked in a second place tie with Mt. San Antonio College with two matches remaining in the regular season. On Friday, Cerritos will host fourth place Long Beach City (10-11, 7-5), while the Mounties will host first place El Camino College (20-2, 12-0).

In their first meeting, the Falcons defeated LBCC in five games, while the Mounties were swept by the Warriors. The final match for both Cerritos and Mt. SAC are against the seventh and eighth place teams in the standings.

Leading the way in the win over LATT was sophomore Jasmynne Roberts (Long Beach Poly HS), who had a team-high 17 kills with just two attack errors and added 11 digs. Sophomore setter Michelle Barba (Downey HS) amassed 29 assists in two games, with freshman Natalie Caravantes (Montebello HS) coming on in the third set and recorded 10 assists.

Sophomore Jasmin Mitchell (Warren HS) produced eight kills in the win to go along with four blocking assists, while sophomore Sara Hickman (La Mirada HS) contributed 10 kills, eight digs and three service aces. Also playing well in a limited role was freshman Tisha Lenon (Gahr HS), who had four kills, while freshmen Sandra Alvarado (Western HS) and Lisa Fuentes (Santa Fe HS) combined for eight digs.
