Volleyball: Falcons open the season with sweep of Santa Ana

The Cerritos College volleyball team opened the 2015 season with a sweep of Santa Ana College on Friday evening. In a match that lasted just over an hour, the Falcons (1-0) defeated the host Dons (0-2), 25-14, 25-15, 25-16. Next up for the team will be the Cerritos Tournament, which will take place next weekend with the team playing three matches on Friday and then the playoff rounds on Saturday.

Sophomore libero Jasmine Peralta (Lakewood HS) had a terrific match, as she posted a career-high seven kills and added five digs. She posted four of her kills in the first game, as the Falcons took advantage early and never looked back. Peralta was complimented by freshman middle blocker Kayley Stephens (Cypress HS), who led all players with 10 kills.

With the three-game win, Cerritos was able to go deep onto their bench after their starters posted balanced numbers. Sophomore Nicole Spigner (La Mirada HS) accounted for six kills and eight digs, while sophomore Valerie Montoya (La Mirada HS) added five kills, eight digs and four service aces. Both players missed last season.

Freshman Monica Vega (South Gate HS) registered a team-high 12 digs to go with four kills, while sophomore setter Natalie Caravantes (Baldwin Park HS) registered 28 assists. Freshman Elisa Camarillo (South Gate HS) led the bench players with two kills, while freshman Cristina Kennedy (Cabrillo HS) posted four digs.
