Competing in the Riverside City Tournament over the weekend, the Cerritos College women's water polo team won two of their four games. The Falcons (5-4) opened with wins over both Citrus College (11-9) and Ventura College (11-7) on Friday, before suffering losses to San Joaquin Delta College (16-8) and Santa Barbara City College (17-11) on Saturday. The team will resume South Coast Conference play on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. when they travel to Pasadena City College.

Cerritos vs. Citrus: Trailing early in the game, 4-1 and then 6-4 at intermission, the Falcons used a 5-2 third period to take a lead they would not relinquish. Both freshmen Mayra Olivas (Montebello HS) and Carolina Medrano (Schurr HS) each scored in the first minute of the third period to draw even at 6-6. Once the Owls took a brief 7-6 lead, sophomore Lizbeth Gomez (Schurr HS) scored :20 seconds later to once again tie the match. It was a pair of man-advantage goals by freshman Karol Martinez (Warren HS) before the end of the period that put the team in the lead. Freshmen Kate De La Mora (Schurr HS) and Marisela Olivas (Schurr HS) scored the final two goals of the game after Citrus tied the match once again. De La Mora led the team with three goals, while the trio of Medrano, Gomez and Martinez each scored twice. Mayra Olivas produced seven steals in the win, with sophomore goalkeeper Dulce Medina (Paramount HS) posting six saves.

Cerritos vs. Ventura: Knowing that every win plays a huge role in the team's chances of making the Southern California Regional Playoffs, the Falcons held off the Pirates for a key victory. Leading 4-3 early in the third period, Cerritos scored four straight goals to hold a five-goal advantage. Medrano and De La Mora each scored twice during that run, while the two combined for seven of the team's 11 goals. Mayra Olivas played a key role in the win with three goals and seven steals, with Gomez dishing out a career-high seven assists. Medina came up with several huge saves and finished the match with 10 stops.

Cerritos vs. San Joaquin Delta: The Mustangs opened up a 7-0 lead to start the match before the Falcons could recover. The remainder of the game was played evenly after Mayra Olivas and Gomez scored the final two goals before intermission. De La Mora once again led the team with three goals, while Mayra Olivas had another productive outing with four steals, two assists and a goal. Gomez also contributed two goals, two assists and three steals, with Medina turning away seven shots.

Cerritos vs. Santa Barbara City: Taking on the defending CCCAA State Champions for the second tournament in a row, the Falcons were as close as 8-7 early in the third period after Medrano scored. But the Vaqueros went on to score the next six goals and had eight tallies in the third period. Cerritos was unable to recover from that rally, and dropped the match. The Falcons did receive three goals from the trio of Mayra Olivas (two steals), Medrano and De La Mora, while Gomez assisted on four of the goals.
