W. Water Polo: Early lead results in 17-8 victory

Competing at Pasadena City College on Wednesday in a South Coast Conference match, the Cerritos College women's water polo team recorded a 17-8 victory. The win by the Falcons (6-4, 2-0) keeps them unbeaten in conference play, while the team will travel to Rio Hondo College for another conference match at 3:00 p.m. next Wednesday.

Cerritos jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period, with freshman Marisela Olivas (Schurr HS) accounting for two goals and an assist. It was an 8-3 advantage by halftime, while a 6-2 third period scoring frenzy put the game out of reach. Freshman Carolina Medrano (Schurr HS) scored three goals in a row in the span of 1:28 to turn a 9-4 game into an eight-goal advantage. Freshman Kate De La Mora (Schurr HS) posted the next two goals to complete a 6-0 run for the Falcons.

By the end of the game, Medrano had a team-high five goals, while De La Mora accounted for four goals, three steals and drew three ejections. As for Mayra Olivas (Montebello HS), she recoded six steals and three assists to go with her three goals, while Marisela Olivas matched her sister's goal total, while dishing out a team-high four assists. As a team, Cerritos ended the match with 23 steals, with 10 of the 12 field players recording at least one steal.

Sophomore Dulce Medina (Paramount HS) played in three periods and made six saves, with freshman Lesly Madrid (Long Beach Jordan HS) coming on in the third period and made one save, while allowing two goals. Madrid was the first player other than Medina to see time in goal.
