W. Cross Country: Cerritos takes fifth at SCC Championships

Competing in the South Coast Conference Championships on Friday, the Cerritos College women's cross country team finished in fifth place. The Falcons finished with 115 team points in the 5K race at Legg Lake Park in Whittier and earned a spot in the Southern California Championships, which will take place next Saturday at Irvine Regional Park. Mt. San Antonio College came in first place with 37 team points and were followed by Los Angeles Harbor College (64), Chaffey College (89) and Long Beach City College (110).

Cerritos was able to block their top finishers, but the first runner to cross the finish line came in 22nd place out of 66 overall runners. Rebecca Harris (Buena Park HS) posted a time of 19:55 to lead the Falcons and waS followed by a trio of runners who finished within three seconds apart. Sabrina Padilla (Montebello HS) took 26th place with a time of 20:30.0, while the duo of Adriana Velasco (Downey HS) and Brianna Gill (La Serna HS) finished simultaneously at 20:33.0 to come in 27th and 28th places, respectively.

The final runner to account for the team scoring was Tyler Simpson (Dominguez HS), whose time of 20:43.0 put her in 30th place. Also running for Cerritos on the day were Katherine Batres (Schurr HS; 33rd place; 20:49.0), Gabrielle Mendoza (Schurr HS; 34th place; 20:54.0), Kathia Munoz (Paramount HS; 36th place; 21:14.0), Raquel Hernandez (Downey HS; 38th place; 21:28.0), Bailee Wilkerson (Mayfair HS; 43rd place; 21:56.0) and Heidi Rouse (Mayfair HS; 59th place; 2:57.0).
