In her first collegiate cross country meet, Cerritos College freshman Lauren Berg (Fountain Valley HS) outraced all 91 other runners at the Fresno Invitational on Saturday morning. Berg completed the 5K race in a time of 19:13.0 and edged out Fresno Pacific University's Araceli Mancilla by exactly one second. In fact, the next nine finishers behind Berg all came from four-year universities.

As a team, the Falcons finished in eighth place with 212 points, while three other community colleges finished ahead of them. Next Friday, Cerritos will travel to Craig Regional Park in Fullerton for the Biola Invitational. The course is the same the team will run at the CCCAA State Championships in November.

Sitting in second place two miles into the race, Berg was able to pull ahead of Fresno State University runner Morgan Hutchinson, who was in the lead at the time. Once she catapulted past Hutchinson, who finished third overall, Berg was able to withstand the late kick from Mancilla, who was :10 seconds behind at the two-mile mark.

It would be over two minutes before the next Falcon runner would complete the course, as freshman Tracy Acevedo (Santa Fe HS) posted a time of 21:28.8, which put her 42nd overall on the day. The duo of freshman Natalie Juarez (Norwalk HS) and sophomore Valeria Guerra (Warren HS) would be the next to cross the finish line and were :10 seconds apart. Juarez placed 64th overall in a time of 22:59.2, with Guerra taking 66th overall in 23:09.9. Freshman Maggie Quinones (Downey HS) was the final Cerritos entry and turned in an 82nd place time of 26:03.6.
