Baseball: Conference season opens with 13-10 loss

In their South Coast Conference opener, the Cerritos College baseball team fought back against Los Angeles Harbor twice, but in the end came up short in a 13-10 decision. The Falcons (3-7-1, 0-1), who trailed 5-0 and 9-5, came back to take a 10-9 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. However, the Seahawks (4-8, 1-0) tied the game in the eighth and won the game on a three-run, walk-off home run. The two will meet up at Kincaid Field at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday.

In the top of the eighth inning, freshman Angel Alvarez (Arvada, CO HS) reached on an error, with freshman Mike Santos (Servite HS) following with a base hit. Sophomore Alex Bueno (Centennial, NV HS) drove in the first run of the game with a base hit, while another error allowed the second run of the inning to score. With one out, freshman Luis Chavarin, Jr. (Sonora HS) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Freshman Andy Vega (Mary Star of the Sea HS) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in a run, while freshman Lucas Iorgulescu (Marina HS) followed with a two-run single to put Cerritos in the lead, 10-9.

LA Harbor responded with a two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game, while pinch-hitter Ben Davidson clubbed the three-run home run to end the game in the ninth inning.

On the day, Vega went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Iorgulescu added a pair of hits and two RBI. Freshman leadoff hitter Julian Francois (Serra HS) added a pair of hits and two RBI, with freshman Sawyer Chesley (Laguna Beach HS) had a pair of hits.
