Baseball: Three earn all-conference recognition

Cerritos College freshman pitcher Justin Almeda (Warren HS), who allowed just one earned run over his last 17 innings, was named 1st Team All-South Coast Conference. Almeda, who went 2-2 in seven starts and allowed just 27 hits over 40 2/3 innings, was the lone Falcons to receive 1st Team recognition. Freshman second baseman Andy Vega (Mary Star of the Sea HS) was a 2nd Team selection, while freshman outfielder Lucas Iorgulescu (Marina HS) received honorable mention recognition.

Andy Vega earned 2nd Team all-conference honors Lucas Iorgulescu was an honorable mention pick Almeda, who tossed the lone complete game for the Falcons, followed that up with eight shutout innings against Pasadena City, as the team registered their only shutout of the season. He also threw six shutout innings against Compton College and concluded conference play with 29 strikeouts.

Vega (pictured, left) led the team in conference with a .403 batting average and drove in 10 runs, while sharing the team lead with 14 runs scored. He was also successful on all five of his stolen base attempts, while he had a four-hit game against El Camino College, along with four three-hit games. He ended the season on a six-game hitting streak by going 11-for-24 (.458).

With Iorgulescu (pictured, right), he saw time at three infield positions before taking over the starting position in left field. He batted .338 in SCC play and led the team in doubles (9) and RBI (13) despire missing the final three games of the season. Iorgulescu had a .962 fielding percentage and two outfield assists. At the plate, he had five multiple-hit games, including a 3-for-3 day with a walk against Mt. San Antonio.
