In one season with the Cerritos College men's basketball team, forward Jacob Washington (Washington Prep HS) was a 1st Team All-South Coast Conference South Division selection and the first player in the program's history to commit to a Mid American Conference team. Washington, who played his freshman season at Los Angeles Harbor College, has committed to Bowling Green University, who finished the season with a 21-7 record. Their season came up an end prior to the start of the MAC Tournament.

Jacob Washington dunks on his former team "The process with Bowling Green was great," said Washington, who will major in Business and if he doesn't make the NBA, aspires to own a shoe company. "All of the coaches were honest and straightforward. I was also in contact with a few other schools, but Bowling Green was the right fit for me."

"With recruiting being slow due to COVID-19, there were many people interested in Jacob at the D2 level and he had offers," said head coach Russ May. "Bowling Green got involved about a week ago and they watched his film and loved how his skill-set would fit into their program and it quickly escalated to the offer he received today. They like his ability to operate in the pick-and-roll situation, shoot the three and rebound. They also needed a player that could play inside and out which Jacob fits all their needs."

In his one season with the Falcons, Washington was the team's second leading scorer (10.0) and rebounder (6.6). He opened the year with a season-high 18 points against Santiago Canyon College and matched it against his former Seahawks teammates. He scored in double-figures 15 times, which included a three-game stretch where he converted 21-of-34 field goals and averaged 17 points. During that stretch, Washington posted 17 points and a season-high 17 rebounds against Pasadena City College.

"The coaches at Bowling Green liked the way I played inside and out," added Washington. "They liked my rebounding and ability to be a team player. They were also looking for someone who was a little older and more experienced, too. Cerritos prepared me a way I never thought was possible. I can thank Coach (Russ) May enough an the rest of the Cerritos coaches for helping me get to the next level."

Washington had a productive freshman year at LA Harbor, averaging 10.3 points and 7.5 rebounds a game, which included an 18-point game against Cerritos. But he felt limited at LA Harbor and felt that moving to a larger school and just a different situation. With that in mind, he decided on Cerritos and reached out.

"My time at Harbor was good," remembered Washington. "I learned a lot and grew up more as a player. When I decided to leave, I chose Cerritos because I wanted to be in a better situation and take my game to the next level. Coach May helped me with that. I also wanted to thank Coach Danny (Lawton) for getting to Cerritos and being someone I can talk to, as well."

"When Jacob transferred to Cerritos, we were very excited to have a player of his talent" stated May. "He brought us an impact player in the paint and a guy who could dominate a game. He was counted on to produce and was very consistent. Jacob is very skilled and can shoot the ball well. He's also a very good passer who understands the game and can score with his back to the basket. I believe those skills will translate well at the next level. He is a solid rebounder with the ability to guard inside and out."

Bowling Green, who are also the Falcons, finished the regular season in second place in the MAC East Division despite of dropping their final three regular season games. They were set to face Toledo University in the first round of the conference tournament when the season came to an end. They had defeated the Rockets in their two previous meetings.

The Washington signing with a major Division I program is a great boost to the basketball program, and that fact doesn't escape May.

"I believe our program has consistently produced scholarship players at all levels and that is a testament to the school, the support system," added May. The assistant coaches and they type of players we have in our program are also a key component. We are very happy to have another D1 player. I believe that is almost 60 plus players in 12 years that have moved on. I believe that alone is a very good reason to choose Cerritos and it does help our recruiting to have a track record that we have."

Washington is the second Cerritos player to move on to the next level, as he joins Jalen Washington, who signed with Kethany (KS) College.
