Playing at the San Diego Mesa Tournament on Friday, the Cerritos College men's water polo team recorded a pair of victories. The Falcons (10-1) opened with a 14-13 overtime win over San Diego State University and followed that with a convincing 24-5 victory over Southwestern College. The team will resume South Coast Conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Chaffey College for a 4:15 p.m. match.
Cerritos vs. San Diego State: The Falcons fell behind 5-0 in the second period, but slowly worked their way back into the game and scored five of the next six goals on goals by five different players. Cerritos took their first lead of the game at 9-8 in the third period on a goal by Kameron Simmons (Evanston Township, IL HS). After they fell behind, 10-9, Cerritos posted the next three goals on tallies by Jesus Rojas (Colegio Fray Luis Amigo, Venezuela), Cesar Altamirano (Tustin HS) and Israel Rodriguez (Whittier HS) for a 12-10 advantage with 3:49 left in regulation. The game went into overtime and the Falcons were the only team to score, which secured the victory. Rodriguez led the team with three goals, while Simmons, Altimirano, Rojas and Jeffrey Park (Cerritos HS) all added a pair of goals. Rojas also added four assists and four steals, with freshman Jason Curiel (El Rancho HS) recording 12 saves during his time in goal.
Cerritos vs. Southwestern: In their second game of the day, the Falcons scored early and often, as they took a 7-1 lead after the first period and held a 12-1 lead at halftime. The lopsided win allowed Cerritos to use their bench and they delivered. Mark Arroyo (Schurr HS) scored a season-high six goals, along with six steals and five assists, with freshman Bryan Santis (La Serna HS) adding five goals, which was his high of the year. Freshman Jonathan Butz (Los Altos HS), Julio Arroyo (Montebello HS) and Nicholas Garcia (Montebello HS) each added a pair of goals in the win. Curiel and Matthew Contreras (Montebello HS) combined for 13 saves.
