Although it's just their first tournament of the season, the Cerritos College men's water polo team has already been locked up in a pair of tight matches on their first day of competition. Playing at the Merced Tournament over the weekend, the Falcons opened with a tough 8-7 loss against UC Merced and followed that with a 14-13 victory over Sierra College. On the second day of the tournament on Saturday, Cerritos opened with a convincing 21-8 win over the host school and capped off their weekend with a 20-7 victory over Modesto College.

The team will travel to Colorado Springs, CO next weekend to play five games at the Rare Air Challenge at Air Force.

However, UC Merced regained their two-goal lead by then end of the period. Cerritos responded with the first two goals of the fourth period, as sophomore Silvestre Chavez (Downey HS) and freshman Joshua Lamberten (Glendora HS) made it a 6-6 match. Once again, UC Merced came back to take a 7-6 lead with 1:18 remaining on the clock. Sophomore Allan Jimenez (Schurr HS) drew the game even on his goal with 1:06 on the clock on the team's next possession. But UC Merced had the final answer, as they scored the eventual game-winning goal with :45 seconds left. Cerritos didn't have an answer and were turned away on their last possession.

Diaz led the team with a pair of goals, with five other players scoring once. Freshman Diego Campos (Downey HS) suffered the loss in the net and made eight saves in the match.

By the end of the game, 12 different players had their name on the scoresheet, with Colon and freshman Johan Gaytan (Downey HS) leading the way with three goals each.
