The Cerritos College women's basketball team picked up one win in three games at the College of the Sequoias Tournament over the weekend. The Falcons (2-6) suffered an 83-57 loss to the host Giants to open the tournament and followed with a 68-55 victory over Solano College. They concluded the tournament with a 77-63 setback against Mission College. The team will now compete in the Orange Coast Classic, which starts on December 19, with Cerritos opening with a 7:00 p.m. game against the host Pirates.
Cerritos vs. College of the Sequoias: Taking on the host Giants, the Falcons received 24 points, 11 rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals from freshman Esther Franks (Long Beach Millikan HS), who was the only player to score in double figures. She connected on 10-of-25 shots, while the rest of the team was 11-for-37 on the night. Cerritos fell behind early, 16-5 after the first quarter and saved their biggest scoring output for the fourth quarter, when they scored 25 of their points. Freshmen Julia Ochoa (Whittier HS) and Angie Ferreira (Long Beach Millikan HS) each contributed seven points, with Ferreira also pulling down six boards.
Cerritos vs. Solano: The Falcons avenged a loss earlier in the season to Solano at the Riverside Tournament. They trailed 47-42 after three quarters, but outscored the Solano Falcons, 26-8 in the fourth quarter. Franks (16 points, seven rebounds, five assists) led the way, while sophomore Kaylyn James (Lakewood HS) and freshman Crystal Rodriguez (El Rancho HS) both posted 14 points and combined for seven rebounds in the win. Ochoa netted a trio of three-pointers to finish with nine points and also pulled down seven rebounds.
Cerritos vs. Mission: Trailing by 10 (29-19) at halftime, the Falcons got to within five points (56-51) after a James three-pointer with 7:58 remaining. But the Saints responded with a trey of their own to regain an eight-point lead. Cerritos had one last run, and when Ochoa hit a threee-pointer with 6:03 left, they trailed by only 59-55. Once again, Mission had a response and went on for the win. Ochoa, who connected on five three-pointers, led the team with 16 points, with Franks (15 points, 12 rebounds) and James (14 points) also playing well.
