W. Basketball: Pair of Falcons named 1st Team All-SCC South Division

The sophomore tandem of Sarah Hernandez (St. Paul HS) and Mariah Lora (Warren HS) were voted as 1st Team All-South Coast Conference South Division, with two others earning 2nd Team recognition. Freshmen Precious Yerena (Downey HS) and Jordan Lewis (Downey HS) were voted to the 2nd Team.

Hernandez, who led the Falcons in scoring (13.1) and rebounding (8.3), posted six 20-point games, which included a career-high 28 points against Chaffey College, while she netted a season-high five-three-pointers against College of the Sequoias on her was to a 21-point outing. In a game against Riverside City College, Hernandez hauled in a season-high 16 rebounds, and finished the year with nine games with 10 or more boards. She was a clutch shooter for Cerritos during the season and came up with several big shots that either got the team withuing striking distance or put them in the lead.

Mariah Lora was named both 2nd Team all-conference and Academic All-State The team's point guard, Lora (pictured, left) averaged 7.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. In the penultimate game of her career, Lora produced a career-high 24 points, which included four three-pointers, while she scored in double-figures nine times during the year. Someone who was effective on both ends of the court, Lora had a seven-rebound game against Los Angeles Harbor, as well as seven others where she had five or more boards. In the final game of the year, Lora dished out a season-high six assists.

Along with being named all-conference, Lora parlayed her 4.0 grade point average into being named as an Academic All-State selection. The English major is the second Falcon to be honored in as many years.

Yerena averaged 9.3 points and 3.1 rebounds a game, which included a season-high 18 points against Santa Ana College. She scored in double digits in six of the last nine games of the year, which also included a season-high seven rebounds against Los Angeles Southwest College. As for Lewis, she averaged 5.3 points and 5.9 rebounds a game. She concluded the year by martching her season-high in points (12), which she accomplished twice in the final four games. Lewis hauled down a season-high 13 rebounds against Grossmont College and ended the year with a double-double that also included 11 rebounds.
