After leading the Cerritos College women's soccer team to their sixth straight South Coast Conference title, and #1 ranking in the country for the majority of the season, Ruben Gonzalez was named the SCC Women's Sports Coach of the Year for 2011-12. The Falcons won their first 20 games of the season (14 by shutout) before a loss in the final regular season game was followed by a 1-0 defeat to Orange Coast College in the first round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs, which ended their season prematurely.

During his seven seasons as the head coach, Gonzalez has posted a remarkable 149-15-11 record, which includes state championships in 2007 and 2008, as well as a National Championship in 2008. He has led his teams to six straight conference titles and have not lost a conference game since 2009, while they are unbeaten in their last 29 straight games (27-0-2) entering the 2012 season.
