Posting their best quality win of the season, the Cerritos College volleyball team swept #19-ranked Pasadena City College, 25-20, 25-20, 25-18. The South Coast Conference road win for the Falcons (10-7, 3-1) on Wednesday night was their first win on an opponent's home court this season. The team will look for their third win in a row when they travel to East Los Angeles College on Friday for a 6:00 p.m. match.
One of the keys to the team's win was their back row defense, as three players posted double-digit digs for the Falcons. Leading the way was freshman Monica Vega (South Gate HS) with 18 digs, while she also registered 10 kills and five service aces in the win. Sophomore Nicole Spigner (La Mirada HS) turned in her best night at the net all season with 16 kills to go along with 15 digs and three service aces.
Cerritos led from start to finish in the first set, but had to withstand a rally by the Lancers. Leading 15-11, PCC scored four straight points to tie the game until a service error and attack error gave the Falcons a 17-15 advantage. With the score 17-16, freshman Kayley Stephens (Cypress HS) and Spigner posted consecutive kills, followed by a pair of Vega service aces and another Spigner kill, which gave the team a 22-16 lead, that would hold up in a 25-20 decision.
The match was tied six times early in the second set until the Falcons broke a 7-7 tie with six straight points. Three Lancer attach errors aided the Cerritos cause during that run, while four errors by the Falcons saw a 17-12 lead turn into a slim 17-16 advantage. Kills by sophomore Natalie Caravantes (Baldwin Park HS) and Vega, as well as another attack error made it a 20-16 lead. The Falcons clinched the second set on a PCC service error.
For the first time on the night, Cerritos was behind to start the third set, but didn't last long. With freshman Rocio Rojo-Perez (Bellflower HS) serving, the Falcons scored three straight points for a 6-4 lead. The match was tied four more times until it was 16-16. That's where Cerritos pulled away to clinch the victory, as they posted eight straight points with Vega serving, with three of those points coming from service aces.
Stephens finished with seven kills, while Caravantes directed the offense with 31 assists and sophomore Jasmine Peralta (Lakewood HS) added 12 digs and two kills.
