Taking on second place El Camino College in a South Coast Conference match on Wednesday, the Cerritos College volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to the Warriors, 18-25, 15-25, 25-22, 20-25. With three regular season matches remaining on their schedule, the Falcons (4-14, 2-7) will host Rio Hondo College at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.

Cerritos trailed from the outset of the match and although they took an early lead in the second set, couldn't regain their footing and found themselves down 2-0 in sets.

It was a back and forth third set, with the Falcons opening up a 16-13 advantage after a kill from sophomore Aiyana Sierra (La Mirada HS), while a kill from sophomore Abby Gutierrez (Downey HS) broke a 17-17 tie. Down 20-19, Cerritos scored four consecutive points to take a 23-20 lead, as sophomore Breanna Lizarraga (Paramount HS) served up an ace to go along with kills from Sierra and freshman Kaydence Portillo (Bell Gardens HS). Sophomore Sonye Garcia (Paramount HS) made it a 24-21 lead and after the Warriors posted a kill, they committed a service error, which extended the match to a fourth set.

A couple of rallies by the Warriors enabled them to open a 15-9 lead in the fourth set until Cerritos scored five points of their own to get to within 15-14. A trio of attack errors were coupled with a kill from Garcia and two blocks from Portillo. After a kill from freshman Kira Magdaleno (Artesia HS) made it a 20-18 Warriors lead, four straight points put El Camino in position to close out the match.

Sierra led the team with 11 kills to go along with six digs, while the trio of Portillo (three blocks), Garcia and Magdaleno (10 digs) all added seven kills. Sophomore setter Carissa Mendibles (Downey HS) accounted for 33 assists and seven digs, with Lizarraga playing well from the back row with 16 digs and two service aces. Gutierrez led the team with 23 digs in a standout performance to go along with her five kills.
