W. Water Polo: Cerritos wins second straight SCC championship

For the second consecutive year, the Cerritos College women's water polo team captured the South Coast Conference championship, as they defeated Long Beach City College, 11-6 on Saturday. The Falcons (27-3), ranked #4 in Southern California, will find on on Sunday where they will be seeded for the upcoming Southern California Regional Playoffs. The first round will take place from November 8-10 at Fullerton College. The conference title was also their fifth in the last seven years.

In the win over the Vikings (19-10), Cerritos opened up a 6-0 lead in the second quarter, with five different players scoring, while sophomore goalkeeper Sharon Ku (Cerritos HS) was turning shots away. Long Beach City did make a second half run and got as close as 9-4, but the Falcons had an answer every time.

Freshman Angelica Hernandez (El Rancho HS) led the team with three goals, while sophomore Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) added a pair of third quarter goals and recorded three steals. Also posting two goals were freshman Jasmine Villalpando (Montebello HS) and sophomore Diana Medina (Pioneer HS), with Ku finishing the game with 11 saves.
