Over the course of his 18 years as the Cerritos College women's water polo head coach Sergio Macias has experienced a great deal of success, highlighted by a 2008 CCCAA State Championship. Another line on his resume can now say he was selected as one of the 2023 FINA World Aquatics Referee.

Head coach Sergio Macias Macias has led his teams to the post-season 11 times and has led his teams to a combined 342-167 record, guided his teams to five conference championships in his tenure along with 10 20-win seasons. They set a new school record with their 31 victories in 2008. He has had 13 players have earned All-American honors, while 15 players have received All-Southern California recognition. For his efforts, Macias was named the conference's Coach of the Year five times.

It was announced by USA Water Polo that Macias would be one of the referees to officiate World Aquatics (formerly FINA) level events in 2022. Featuring referees with Olympic and World Championship experience, this group has whistled water polo at the highest level. Assignments for various events will be determined prior to the start of competition. In past years, Macias has officiated club, high school, NCAA, USA Water Polo, International Tournaments and in the Mountain Pacific Sports federation (MPSF). He is currently a Level 5 USAWP referee.

His first assignment will be the North Texas New Year's Showcase (December 28 - January 3) and will include team from the United States, Serbia and Spain.
