Beach Volleyball: Cerritos advances pair to SoCal Regionals

Taking part in their first-ever South Coast Conference Pairs Tournament, the Cerritos College beach volleyball team has advanced one of their doubles pairs to the Southern California Regional Pairs Championships. Competing at Mt. San Antonio College for the past two days, the tandem of sophomore Jenni Solano (La Mirada HS) and freshman Emily Gutierrez (Downey HS) won the seventh place match, which advances them to the next round. The SoCal Pairs Championships will take place next weekedn at El Camino College.

The two were seeded #15 for the tournament and opened with a 21-15, 20-22, 15-12 win over #18-seeded Addy Abrams and Perla Lopez of El Camino College. That was followed by the biggest upset of the tournament, when they handed #2-seeded Jade Fuentes and Jaida Zuniga of Rio Hondo College a three-set decision. The Falcon pair dropped the first set, 21-23, but rebounded for a 21-17 win in the second set and posted a 15-3 win in the tie-breaker.

Solano and Gutierrez suffered their first loss of the tournament when they lost to #7-seeded, and eventual runner-up, Taina Allen and Mikayla Curry, 14-21, 16-21. Now competing in the consolation bracket, the duo were handed a 16-21, 19-21 loss to #6-seeded Maria Bejines and Osy Rolday of Rio Hondo College. Dropped to the seventh place match against Eyana Vaielua and Kaylani Moncada of Long Beach City, the upsets weren't complete, as Solano and Gutierrez capped off their day against their #4-seeded opponents with a 21-19, 21-5 win.

The two were the only Falcons pairs to win a match at the tournament.
